Aims & Outcomes
The program aims to provide detailed knowledge and understanding of the unique circumstances associated with the prescribing of drugs to athletes within a sporting context.
On completion of the program, students should:
- Appreciate the unique requirements for prescribing drugs to athletes in a sporting environment
- Apply a systematic approach to the pharmacological treatment of medical conditions frequently encountered by athletes, including sports injuries
- Know the content and regulations associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List
- Understand how to choose medication options permitted in sport, or apply for Therapeutic Use Exemptions if prohibited medications are necessary
- Understand the role of prescribers in doping prevention
- Apply an evidence-based approach to advising on the benefits and risks of supplement use by athletes
- Appreciate the professional and ethical responsibilities of sports physicians when prescribing for athletes
- Be competent to prescribe within medical services at major sporting events
