IOC Certificate in Prescribing and Drug Management in Sport for Physicians

Aims & Outcomes

The program aims to provide detailed knowledge and understanding of the unique circumstances associated with the prescribing of drugs to athletes within a sporting context.

On completion of the program, students should:

  • Appreciate the unique requirements for prescribing drugs to athletes in a sporting environment
  • Apply a systematic approach to the pharmacological treatment of medical conditions frequently encountered by athletes, including sports injuries
  • Know the content and regulations associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List
  • Understand how to choose medication options permitted in sport, or apply for Therapeutic Use Exemptions if prohibited medications are necessary
  • Understand the role of prescribers in doping prevention
  • Apply an evidence-based approach to advising on the benefits and risks of supplement use by athletes
  • Appreciate the professional and ethical responsibilities of sports physicians when prescribing for athletes
  • Be competent to prescribe within medical services at major sporting events
