Dr Tim Podlogar is an exercise physiologist with interests in sports nutrition, exercise metabolism, environmental physiology, and endurance performance. His work focuses on understanding substrate utilisation before, during, and after exercise, and how this is modified by nutritional interventions and environmental stressors. A central theme is the quantification and optimisation of carbohydrate availability and oxidation, with the aim of translating mechanistic insights into evidence based strategies for performance and recovery in endurance athletes. Dr Podlogar completed undergraduate training in Kinesiology at the University of Ljubljana in 2015 before moving to the University of Birmingham, where he obtained his MSc in 2016 and PhD in 2020 under the supervision of Professor Gareth Wallis. Following his doctorate, he held postdoctoral and academic appointments in Slovenia and the UK, including work on human performance in extreme environments. He joined the University of Exeter as a Lecturer in Applied Physiology in 2024. Alongside his academic work, Dr Podlogar supports professional cycling in applied performance roles, translating laboratory derived evidence into race ready fuelling and recovery strategies for stage racing. Across his applied roles, riders he has worked with have achieved two Grand Tour victories.
