Per A. Renström received his certificate as medical doctor at Göteborg University in Sweden in 1972, finished his residency in orthopedic surgery in 1977 and defended his Ph.D. thesis in 1981. Until 1988, Per worked at the Department of Orthopedics at Sahlgren University Hospital in Göteborg, Sweden. In 1988 Per and his family relocated to the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, USA, where Per worked as full professor in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. In 1997 he started as professor of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Per is since 2007 professor emeritus. Per has authored >350 scientific publications, including 205 original scientific publications in peer reviewed journals. Per is the author or editor of 18 books and 74 full chapters in books and proceedings. The book “Injuries in Sport” authored together with Lars Peterson is a worldwide bestseller. In 1994 Per as part of the Vermont research group received the Kappa Delta Award for Outstanding Orthopedic Research by AAOS and ORS. The same group has twice (1993 and 1997) been awarded the Albert Trillat Young Investigator Award, by ISAKOS. Per has twice (1996 and 1999) received the O´Donoghue Research Award by the AOSSM. In 2005 Per received the SCIF price for “Outstanding research in Sports Science” in Sweden. In 2000, he was appointed by the Swedish Government appointed as chairperson of the Swedish National Research Council of Sports Science (and reappointed in 2003 and 2006). Per was the chairperson for Special Olympics, Sweden 1999-2007 and he was 1990-1998 vice president of FIMS – International Sports Medicine Federation. Per was president 2003-2005 of the international worldwide peer group organization ISAKOS. Per has been a member of the Medical and Scientific Commission of the IOC – International Olympic Committee 1989 – 2012. Per has been Physician for the Swedish Davis Cup team in tennis. Per is the founder 1991, vice president and president of the International Society of Medicine and Science in Tennis (STMS). He is a member of Medical Services Committee of the ATP World Tour since 1998. and a member of the Medical and Scientific Commission of the ITF – International Tennis Federation 1998-2020. Per has been the head physician for the Swedish Football / Soccer Association 2008- 2017. In 1999 Per received FIMS Gold Medal, which is the highest honor given by FIMS. In 2009 elected Honorary member (highest honor) by ISAKOS. In 2008 Per was awarded Honorary Fellowship by the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in Ireland. In July 2009 Per was inducted in the Hall of Fame by AOSSM. In October 2010 Per received the “Duke of Edinburgh Prize” awarded by the Institute of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK). Per was awarded Honorary Fellowship by the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in the Royal College of Physicians, UK in 2011. In 2013 Per was given the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President`s award in gold for 25 years of contributions to the Olympic Movement. Per was in 2017 awarded the Gold medal in Sport by the Swedish Sports Confederation. This is considered the overall finest award given out in Swedish Sport. Per is living in Stockholm with his wife Lena since 54 years. Lena defended in 1988 her Ph.D. in Science education and is emeritus. Lena and Per are very happy for their four children Kerstin, Mårten, Julia and Torsten, their families and six lovely grandchildren.
