Brian has worked in public health at local, national, and international level focussing on emergency planning and the response to major emergencies. He was an advisor on health security to WHO, Co-chair of the WHO COVID-19 Mass Gatherings Expert Group and a member of WHO’s Emergency Committees for COVID-19 and Ebola. Brian worked with WHO’s Mass Gatherings Advisory Group from 2008, heading up the UK Collaborating Centre on Mass Gatherings and Global Health Security. Brian acted as the UK National Incident Director for Ebola in 2014 and was seconded to work with the United Nations Special Envoy on Ebola in Geneva. He was subsequently a member of the post-Ebola IHR Review Committee. Between 2015 and 2017, Dr McCloskey was responsible for establishing the UK’s Public Health Rapid Support Team developed to deploy in serious outbreaks globally. He is the public health advisor to the International Olympic Committee’s Health, Medical and Science Commission and was responsible for developing the COVID-19 countermeasures for the Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Olympics.
