Martin Schwellnus is an Emeritus Professor of Sport and Exercise Medicine at both the Faculties of Health Sciences of the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria. He is a registered specialist Sports and Exercise Medicine physician, holds a Fellowship of the College of Sport and Exercise Medicine of South Africa (FCSEM (SA)), and is the current President of the College of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CSEM) of South Africa. He has been the Director of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Research Center in South Africa for the last 15 years. He has been in private Sport and Exercise Medicine practice (part-time) for over 25 years, consulting with elite and recreational athletes. He has a passion for promoting regular safe physical activity for all, including patients with known chronic disease. His clinical and research interest is in several areas in sport and exercise medicine, notably the health benefits of regular exercise, the prevention and management of injuries, acute infections and exercise, and prevention of medical complications in active individuals. He is an active researcher who has published over 400 scientific journal articles, chapters in books and conference proceedings. He is an NRF B rated scientist with a Scopus H-index of 51.
