Gary is a performance focused sports dietitian and sports physiologist who has been working in elite sport since 1996. He currently holds a part time appointment at the University of the Sunshine Coast, with the rest of his time being taken up as the Network Lead in Sports Nutrition for Australia’s new sports system. This brings him back to the AIS again after several periods there within the Departments of Sports Nutrition and Physiology in its previous system. His expertise and experience in both the academic and practice fields of sports nutrition is described in the biography accompanying Lecture 1 in this module. In this lecture, Gary showcases his commitment to “walking the walk” of sports nutrition, by outlining his experiences in undertaking a body building competition in 2014, after spending many years in the gym as a ‘closet bodybuilder’. Gary has developed a strong professional interest in the fitness industry, including research and individual athlete management amongst aesthetic sport/ fitness athletes. It’s a wild, wild world out there where ‘broscience’ rules and the wider your claims, the more cutting edge you appear. Gary will also describe the physique assessment company he has established with a colleague; Physique Science, a DXA scanning business that has evolved from research Gary has been involved with over the last 20 years
